Keto acids as growth-limiting factors in autotrophic growth of Thiobacillus thiooxidans.
When the strictly autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans was grown on sulfur, keto acids accumulated in the medium until they reached an inhibitory level at which growth ceased. Much greater growth was possible if these substances were continually dialyzed out of the medium.
متن کاملAutotrophic Growth of Thiobacillus acidophilus in the Presence of a Surface-Active Agent, Tween 80.
Cellular protein, pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, and static surface tension were measured during growth of Thiobacillus acidophilus on elemental sulfur in the absence and presence of up to 5,000 mg of Tween 80 per liter. The decrease in pH and the increase in sulfate production were observed to be less accurate measurements of growth when compared with the increase in cellular protein. The...
متن کاملCarbohydrate Degradation Pathways in Thiobacillus A2 Grown on Various Sugars
A detailed radiorespirometric and enzymological analysis was made of the wild-type and GFI strains of Thiobacillus A2 grown on numerous sugars. The wild-type used the EmbdenMeyerhof, Entner-Doudoroff and pentose phosphate pathways for glucose oxidation only after culture on glucose. The fast-growing strain GFI used all three pathways after growth on glucose, maltose or fructose. The wild-type g...
متن کاملGrowth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans on Formic Acid.
A variety of acidophilic microorganisms were shown to be capable of oxidizing formate. These included Thiobacillus ferrooxidans ATCC 21834, which, however, could not grow on formate in normal batch cultures. However, the organism could be grown on formate when the substrate supply was growth limiting, e.g., in formate-limited chemostat cultures. The cell densities achieved by the use of the lat...
متن کاملOxidation of Carbon Disulphide as the Sole Source of Energy for the Autotrophic Growth of Thiobacillus thioparus Strain TK
The ability of microorganisms to grow on carbon disulphide (CS,) as a sole source of carbon and energy appears to be very limited : none was obtained from enrichment culture and eight Thiobacillus species could not use it. Thiobacillus thioparus strain TK-m could grow autotrophically on either CS2 or carbonyl sulphide (COS) as sole substrates. Growth yield on CS2 was 7.9 f 0.9 g cell-carbon (mo...
